Often, as young adults come out of high school or college and move into adulthood, the transitions seem nonstop. Just when you thought you had one element of your life figured out, something major shifts in your life. Or, maybe you had a detailed plan for what life would be like after your education. You had a timeline, whether you spoke it into existence or not, and it’s not your reality today.

On top of that, if you’re like many of the 20- and 30-somethings our therapists work with, you’re probably struggling with questions about your identity. This new period of your life has led you to reflect on your childhood, your relationships, and who you are as a human being. You’re not alone if you’ve been asking yourself “Who am I?” or “What do I want out of life?” We commend you for asking yourself these important, complex, and challenging questions!

Many folks in their 20s and 30s start diving into self-discovery. Often, when you’ve moved away from a place or time in your life, you can finally start thinking about your lived experiences. These thoughts and questions can concern many aspects of yourself. These range from past traumas, friend and/or partner breakups, sexual orientation and/or gender identity, family of origin values and relationships, spirituality, and many other elements.

Thinking about all of these parts of yourself can be quite overwhelming. And sometimes when you’re processing deeply like this, you don’t want to share it with your loved ones. Perhaps there’s some fear of rejection about parts of your identity. Or you’re just not ready to share until you are certain about your feelings. This makes complete sense. And if you’re interested, our therapists can help you work out all these overwhelming thoughts and feelings.
